What’s on your mind? Do you have questions about me and my blog?  Today is your day.  Shoot me questions and I will try my best to answer them.

Anyway, Darren Rowse inspired me to write this post.  Here is Darrens post on getting more reader engagement for your blog.  Check it out – it’s superb.

Nothing appeals to me more than to involve you with my blog.  I’ve been doing it the traditional way:  I write a post and you leave your comments.  You’re quite a lively bunch of readers and buddies to me.  Can’t be more pleased.  How you react to my posts have been energizing my blog since you started sharing with me your thoughts.  Priceless.

But a question and answer post is a splendid way to make your stake in my blog  a notch higher.  Let’s give this a shot, shall we?

Talking points

About WritingToExhale.  Do you like the direction I’m taking?  Do you hate it when I blog about blogging or when I write about writing?  Do you have questions about writing you wish I’d write more about?  What do you want to see in my blog in terms of features, design, and focus?

About Jan
.  Do you feel I should write more with my heart rather than with my ass?  Do you have a problem with my tone?  What do you suggest I should do to improve my interaction with you?

These are just my sample questions to get you going.  Feel free to ask your own.

One request though about your feedback:  Much as I want to get a magnificent reader engagement, I ask that you be gentle.  This is my first time.  Ahem.  Over to you now.

  • Jan, as I dig into your archives, I began to learn how you had a high regard for Darren Rowse (sino na nga siya?).

Anyhow, back to the topic, if there's one question I want to ask, eto 'yun: "Bakit ang tagal mo nang hindi nagboblog?"

  • Hi LJ! How in the world did I miss this post? June 2009?!

Anyhow, it is my humble opinion that you are over analyzing this coming back to blogging business. I know because I do it all the time - over analyzing I mean. :p
  • Just as well. I might not be able to answer my friends' questions... That's true. Taking a long rest is the worst idea I've ever had. Every blog post idea seems preposterous and useless. But let's see - I've given myself permission to be silly again. Maybe something will come out of that.

    4. If people can live on planet Mars, would you prefer to live there or stay on Earth?
    5. If a stranger approached you and handed you $1000.00 (USD) and said "it's yours, just don't ask why" , would you accept it or not? Why?
    6. What's your favorite color?
    7. If you were Neo and Morpheus offered you two pills, which pill would you choose. The blue pill or the red pill? (You can read more about it here, for reference)
    8. "What if..." (then the person who asked it suddenly disappeared) What's your reaction?
    A. Weird
    B. Huh?
    C. OMG!

Oh thank you, DFish. That's a perfect Sunday gift coming from you. I love WriterDad's writings. And he's quite a charming Dad. Even his comments on the blogs he frequents are amazing.

Cool. It's my compulsion - writing to keep my sanity. Thus my reference to Mandaluyong mental hospital. :)
  • I can't think of an "improvement" comment for your blog. Design-wise, I'm a minimalist of sort and the minimalist feel of your blog feeds me. Writing style, what more can I say, it's traditional as Writer's Dad, and it's intellectually stimulating. and passion? There it is, the angst not to get "inside Mandaluyong".

Doc Z: I haven't found any comment. WordPress would have notified me if you had. What I received was your email about a blog contest - the one we were talking about last night?

Maybe you left a comment in another blog? You know, the OMG cutie ones? :)
  • zorlone
I think I have made a mistake last night when i left a comment here. Anyway, forgive me good Sir for I must have not pressed the submit button before I left this site last night.

    About blogging and writing:

Nothing wrong with the approach you have about those two subjects, for goodness sakes man, this is your blog so do whatever you want. We just happen to stop by and read the content of this site. It's not your fault that we honestly like what we read.

I have only been blogging for almost 4 months, although we have different niches, it wont stop me from learning the ropes Jan Geronimo style, right?

Problems with ass writing: If all bloggers or writers write half as well as you do, then, everybody would want to become a blogger. I used the word well because I think you write better than "good," naks! (magpapainom na yan!)

Okay, your tone? I don't hear a tone that speaks of an omniscient blogger here... even if you ask any of the Jedis and our lady warriors, they wont say such a thing. Or a tone that would in any way ridicule a guest who just happened to drop by and appreciate your blog. Well, that's just me talking anyway.

    Direction:
Have you figured this out yet? Where your blog will take you? This is an exciting road my friend, sometimes we don't go to point A to B directly, we go to C or D first before we go to B, that makes it more fun, right? Learning how to get to the other side while passing through some rough roads, alleys, side trips, and so many stop signs along the way. The experiences clump together and point us to the right direction to take in order to reach our destination.

What I would like you to talk about? Lemme see... How about the recent comment you left at silver's page? hehehe. I've been eves dropping. LOL

    Z
.-= Zorlone´s last blog ..Memories of you =-.
  • Jan Geronimo
Thanks, Doc Z. Tunay kang apo talaga. You love your own lolo. Ahahaha. About the direction: Well, there's nothing wrong with evolving to something else, right.

For example, I started this as a personal blog. Then I refocused on blogging and writing and a little of social media thrown in. Maybe tomorrow I'd calibrate my lens again. But for sure it will be something I'm passionate about.

That's an aberration, Doc Z. A momentary lapse. Sana pinalo mo wrist ko. Sometimes I'm being too candid for my own good eh. Ahahaha
  • zorlone
Whapack!!! There some slapping for you! You... you.. lolo! LOL

This is what we should be doing right, expressing our life's passion through blogging. Like my blog, at first i didn't know what to do with it. Now, I still don't (toink!), but I am headed to a direction that I want... so far, ie.

  • hi Jan. I don't have any complaints on your blog. You are a fantastic writer and one that I admire because of the way you "involve" you readers. When we start reading, we know that it is going to get better, that's it. Plain and simple.

With regards to my questions, hmm. Are you ever going to monetize your blog? This is obvious coming from me because of my topic (don't you think?). If I can be of any help, let me know and I can find the "right" affiliate programs for you.

I know I have told you that I will post something about Kindle. Just didn't find the time yet. Anyway, did you know you can sell your blog on Amazon Kindle? It is not a lot but you can get more exposure specially because you "writing" is great. If you want, tell me and I will send you the link (not affiliate:)

Lastly, and if I may, thank you very much for including me in your friends "roll". Is it too much to ask to change the anchor text to "Internet Business Entrepreneur"?. Would really appreciate it.
.-= DiTesco´s last blog ..Earn Money And Boost Traffic With Entrecard =-.
  • Jan Geronimo
    Hi Ditesco,

About monetization: I have registered with the Affiliate Program of Thesis so I'd be putting up their ads on my page. Just can't figure out the best ad format yet. And I'm thinking of bringing Adsense ad again. But this time, I'd place only one Adsense ad - it might screw up the look of the blog if I put in the maximum ads allowed.

If there's an Affiliate Program I'd be interested in it will be about writing.

I'm thinking of putting Darren's 31 DBBB affiliate link. So I had Thesis ad, Darren's affiliate link, one AdSense. Isn't that too many already. I'm worried I might a mini-revolt in my hands. :)

I don't get the part about selling my blog to Kindle. That's interesting. Wouldn't I have to be US-based to qualify for its affiliate program?
  • Not so sure about being US-Based. I am both an affiliate of Amazon Associates and Amazon Kindle. The later is where you can put up your blog for sale. It might not be a lot, but you know, apart from "every bit counts", it is another website where you can leave your online presence. Here is the link to the program Kindle Amazon

  • Paid syndication, Jan. I think "sale" is an inaccurate term. People would pay to subscribe via Kindle. Why they wouldn't just read it online for free is beyond me.

    1. We have a small retail store - pc parts and accessories.

    2. I sneak in blog reading and some commenting at work - when there's nothing to do but wait for customers to come in. Oh, di ba safe answer. And I tweet too at work.

I write my post at night when I get home. I usually postpone dinner until after I've posted. Pag wala post, wala kain. Then I answer comments on the post. Pag wala comment, I read blogs, tweet about it, and write my comments. I sleep at 2 am or 3 am.

I know my skin looks terrible from lack of sleep. But I remedy that by not looking at the mirror. Ahahaha.

  • About Adsense, don't you know you can customize it to complement the theme and colors of your blog?
See , sabi ko na sa yo, something's wrong with your feeds. Hindi nababasa because you probably did not update your Feedburner or there is some code that you have used from Blogspot then when you used it in WP, it's giving an error to feeds.
Eto lang ang pangit sa WP, no customer service. I had that problem before when I copied and pasted some texts from another website and placed it on my post, and from then on, my feeds could not be validated because there's an error in the codes used in Typepad. Good thing, there's always a "human" customer service that I could contact and made them correct it by themselves.
Since you have a host, why don't you try to contact your host technical staff and maybe they know how to fix your feeds.

Kelvin, try subscribing again dito sa new blog. It worked already - I subscribed to my own feed kagabi. :)
  • My only question is how do you have all the time; blogging, networking, Twittering, answering to each comments, and reading online? My gosh, that would take all day for me.

P.S. I still don't get my subscription feeds. You really need to fix that because I think it's a combination of 3 factors; your migration to WP, change of domain name, and Google's acquisition of Feedburner. Your subscribers are not updated anymore and I think your Feed Readers are now "unreadable." Ask your host how to update your Feedburner. I already told you about this to change it to feeds2.
  • Jan Geronimo
I've simplified tweeting by using Friendfeed bookmarklet. When I share a post in Friendfeed it appears in Twitter and Facebook. The good thing is I don't leave the blog. I don't need to open Twitter or Facebook. Then I go to leave a comment. Then I move on to the next blog.

I don't do a lot of blog commenting. It's taking me too long: to read, to digest, and to write a semi-coherent comment. I just hope I leave a sensible comment. I can visit more blogs, leave more comments in a day, but I have to cut down on the length of my comment to cut down on time spent on a blog. But I can't - when I enjoy a post, I take as much time as possible to read and to write the comment. Ahahaha.
  • But I don't see you in my blog anymore.
.-= bingkee´s last blog ..ONE BLOG WILL DIE, BUT ANOTHER IS BORN =-.
  • Jan Geronimo
Bingkee, you have lots of paid posts lately. That's why. Not that I hate them or anything. In fact, I don't feel a thing for paid posts - unless they're about Kindle2 or about Thesis. Those are my two exceptions so far. I'm sorry about that.
  • No i didn't get that. You probably did not solve the captcha. That's not true that I have lots of paid posts. My paid posts ratio is 1 to 5 now. Remember I lost my PR since February ...I had zero PR for 3 1/2 months, so how could I have lots of paid posts? I just started doing paid posts only this month. And any experienced blogger could detect a paid post or not .
Anyway, it's fine that you cannot visit me because I am closing and terminating that blog as soon as my other blog will get a PR 2, which I will work hard on. I guess you don't know yet that I am closing that blog.
And my other blog, I don't need to get so much traffic because my husband's fans and Myspace friends are the target anyway. So I'm finally just getting away from this crappy world of dealing with those morons
.-= bingkee´s last blog ..ONE BLOG WILL DIE, BUT ANOTHER IS BORN =-.
  • Don't you know that your RSS feeds are very , very important? Pag may error, hindi nababasa ng Feedburner at hindi nababasa ng search engines. This blog is just gonna be invisible to search engines if you don't fix your feeds. And your efforts in blogging will be just wasted dahil hindi rin naman nababasa ng search engines. Did you verify this blog at Google Webmaster? Did you submit this blog to directories? If I were you , you have take time off from writing and commenting to spend more time in optimizing your blog. Did you also submit this to search engines? But before you could even do that, you need to fix your Feedburner. Get away from blogging, commenting and reading for some time and spend time on what you're SUPPOSED to do.

Hey, you don't come to my blog anymore and don't leave comments anymore for 2 mons. now.
.-= bingkee´s last blog ..ONE BLOG WILL DIE, BUT ANOTHER IS BORN =-.

Perhaps you need to subscribe again? This time on writingtoexhale? I asked Rocky to fix my feed. He said my latest post is showing up from his end though.

That's not true, Bingkee. I commented on one of your posts: "Let's take a ride in suburbia." After commenting on it, I even shared it on Facebook.

It must be from my own end, Lemuel. I have visited some of sites and their link to me don't show my latest post. Will figure out what's wrong with it. This is so irritating. Grrr.

I'm going to put up an affiliate ad for Thesis Theme in my blog. If I put that in and the blog can still use an Adsense ad then I will put that in too. I'm just a little hesitant about slapping the ad at this point because it might not go well with the look of the blog. I will see what will blend well with Thesis. Oo nga ano? Sayang ang pageviews. :)

  • You're not a pompous ass Jan, you write with a "heart", that's why readers come back to read your posts. You treat your readers as VIPs and connect with them wonderfully. You listen from their inputs - just like what you're doing now- and truly care about them. That's using your heart!

Now to the question: Where are your short stories and poems? lol. I'm dying to read them.

Stories and poems. Well, don't say I didn't warn you, Jena. Now, my muse has locked herself up in her room. I have no spare key. And I hate using beastly strength to break it down. Not my style.

  • Hi Jan! I tried asking these questions offline years back. And guess what? They all have their own opinion, which makes my head spin more. There are so many ideas out there to write about but it all boils down to passion and commitment.

Personally, writing with the heart is great! It always shows the human side of the writer. But there will be times that we can't avoid pulling in fights especially if the subject goes against what's "IN". But it works. I love your blog. No complaints about how you write nor your tone. I guess our belief with conversations is somehow the same. What do you think?

It's saner to write with passion. We just can't throw words and buzz terms together, slap it up with a nice picture and call it a post. That's foolish. We need to be more human.

Google remains relevant because its machines tries their darn best to learn how humans use language. They call it LSI at Google.

    Why can't we?

We don't even have to be adept at semantics. We just have to tune in to our own algorithm and voice out what it's telling us. That's not formidable, right? We call them conversations. I usually call them posts, but come to think of it, they're essentially just that - conversations.
  • Sit on your ass, write with your heart, edit with your brain.

    Ahahaha. Nice summary, Holly. :)
  • Absolutely! It seems that there will be some who will try to solve this machine puzzle. Google tries to learn human language and humans try to learn Google language. Which side of the boat should we be at? One point in time, this two will meet half way.

I read SEO articles - doing my homework, too. But I only take bite-sized morsels. I always take pride in placing more importance on what will be good for my readers. I'm just wishing that Google's algorithm will become so far advanced in the shortest possible time. No need to be conscious about meta tags, meta description, keyword density and all the SEO mumbo jumbo. Ahahaha. I'm such a slow learner in this department. :)

Hi! I had practically no readers in my first two months of blogging. I stayed with it because I had a background in writing. You know the traditional way of writing? There's no immediate feedback from readers. You just don't know what your readers think of your work. If you write for a paper, the most you'd get is an angry letter when you get your facts wrong. That sort of thing. So, you can say that I'm not exactly bothered with lonely aspect of writing. It just comes with the territory.

I was prevailed upon to blog because of an uber blogger who has a wonderful connection with readers. He's got lots and lots of readers. I had likened his comment section once to a convention hall because the number of people lining up to leave a comment is staggering.

And I look at my initial work. I had none. But I stayed at it. Because readers - one at a time - started to visit me. There were only a handful at first. But I don't care. I'm easily pleased anyway. And I truly look forward to what my readers are going to say next. That's exciting for me - engaging them in conversation.

Where's the energy coming from? My readers have it. I'm blogging's Lestalt - feeding on the energy of readers. I can't help it. My readers' pale necks are irresistible. :)

The voices in my head? That's interesting, too. But I'd rather listen to my readers. That's a saner way of blogging for me. :)

OMG, Jan - you're a performance writer! :) Of course. But beware: It's very hard to go back to writing in a vacuum.

  • i am feeling guilty about this. i am finding so little time to be online, much more replying to each comment which i think is proper...so this is the living room, do you serve coffee?

Yes, I do. And instant noodles that come in packets. :)
  • how do you find time to answer all comments to your posts?

  • Jan Geronimo
Answering comments is a priority in my blog routine. If someone bothers to share his thoughts with me, I think it's a matter of courtesy to face him and hold up my end of the conversation. I consider my blog section my living room, and your comments as conversations. I have to carve out time for this.
  • fifi, jan can reply to all the comments because to simply put it... he is an addict ehehhe!
